Eyelid Inflammation (Blepharitis)

What is eyelid inflammation?

Eyelid inflammation, also known as blepharitis, causes the eyelids to become red and swollen, especially around the edges. It is a common condition that can affect people of all ages, but it is most commonly seen in those over 40 years old. While blepharitis is usually not a serious condition, it can lead to other eye problems if not treated properly.

Symptoms

Symptoms of eyelid inflammation may include:

  • Red, swollen, painful, and itchy eyelids
  • Eyelids sticking together, especially when you wake up
  • Oily, crusty eyelashes

Causes

Blepharitis is most often caused by an overgrowth of bacteria along the edge of your eyelids. It’s normal to have some bacteria on your skin, but too many bacteria can cause problems. You may also develop blepharitis if the sebaceous glands in your eyelids become blocked or irritated.

Treatment

The treatment for blepharitis depends on its cause. Sometimes, the condition improves within a few days, but other times it may take longer.

Daily care, such as cleaning your eyes, gently massaging the eyelids, and wiping away dried crusts, can help reduce symptoms. Special wipes and solutions are also available to help manage the condition.

For more severe cases, you may need to take antibiotics. If you have symptoms of chronic eyelid inflammation, we recommend having an eye exam with an eye health check-up.
